| The steps taken during the construction process to reduce environmental impacts |
An environmental study was completed on site prior to commencement of our contract works. Top soil removed from the site was saved and reused at the Boy’s Model school less than 2 miles away. Metal, wood and office paper was recycled. A tower crane was used to reduce noise and plant on site. Fuels were stored in bunded areas and spill kits and drip nappies are used to reduce pollution.
As part of our site clearance works, over 100m of 1m diameter concrete pipe was removed crushed on site for re-use as fill. |
| Innovative construction management techniques |
The steel frame procurement lead-in period was likely to hold back completion of our sub structure work. To mitigate against this we designed concrete plinths to raise the holding down bolts above ground floor slab level. This not only achieved a 4 week gain on our programme but improved health and safety conditions by providing a smooth level concrete surface for steel erection. |

In conjunction with the Chest Heart and Stroke association we provided an occupational nurse to check on health issues of employees.
In conjunction with reducing site accidents Farrans sponsor the Simon Community Charity. For every site that has no sick leave accidents during a month, Farrans make a contribution to the charity.
